Steve Martin delivered the opening monologue

If you were watching the "Saturday Night Live" 50th anniversary special Sunday night you might have found it odd that there was no sentimental goodbye at the end.

Well, what actually happened was viewers were shortchanged. The broadcast was cut short after around 11:15 p.m. when WDIV cut to a commercial break and began airing the local news.

The abrupt ending cut off Paul McCartney's closing performance and the traditional goodbyes that included a tribute to Detroit-native Gilda Radner, a cast member who died in 1989 of ovarian cancer at age 42.

At 11:40 p.m., WDIV issued a statement on X apologizing:

A note to followers: We sincerely apologize for the technical issue that resulted in cutting off the end of #SNL50 tonight. You can watch the full episode on Peacock.
