The corner of Gratiot Avenue and Clinton Street was once slated to be the site of a new, modern Wayne County jail. But cost overruns halted construction in 2013, resulting in the name "Fail Jail." The jail was later built on Russell Street near I-75.

On Tuesday, a joint venture between Henry Ford Health and Grand Rapids-based advanced cancer treatment and research company BAMF Health broke ground on the Gratiot Life Sciences Center at the site, Crain's Detroit Business reports. Construction is slated to begin this year.

"This site will serve as a gateway to Detroit and position the city as a hub for medical tourism and innovation," BAMF said in a press release. "The facility will also provide job opportunities for clinicians, radiopharmacists, nuclear medicine technologists, and more."

"The state-of-the-art facility in Bedrock’s Gratiot Life Sciences Building will deliver cutting-edge molecular imaging, radiopharmaceutical therapy, and clinical trials to people across the city, state, and beyond," the press release said.

The BAMF/Henry Ford Health team plans to occupy the first 45,000-square-foot floor of a two-story, 90,000-square-foot life sciences building, Crain's reports.
